Bioavailability

The fraction of a nutrient or compound that actually reaches circulation and tissues in a usable form after you swallow it.

Bioavailability answers a simple question: how much of what you took actually became available to the body in a meaningful way? A supplement can look impressive on the label and still perform modestly if it is poorly absorbed, rapidly metabolized, or unstable through digestion.

This is why the concept shows up repeatedly on Supplements Apothecary. Curcumin, quercetin, resveratrol, glutathione, and berberine all raise bioavailability questions. The core issue is not whether the ingredient has interesting biology in a lab. The issue is whether the formulation and dose get enough of that ingredient into the right place to matter in humans.

Standard curcumin has limited absorption on its own, which is why many products use phospholipid complexes, liposomal delivery, or absorption enhancers to improve bioavailability.

Higher bioavailability is not automatically better in every context. Some compounds still do useful work in the gut before large amounts ever reach circulation, and more absorption can also mean more side effects at lower doses.
